Trip Overview

Mustang Upper- Mustang comprises the northern two-thirds of the Mustang District. Upper Mustang trek was a restricted area till 1992 by which it became one of the most preserved regions in the world. To get entry access to the upper Mustang we will need a special permit from the government of Nepal. Mustang district falls behind the mountains ‘Himal Pari ko Jilla’ thus receiving relatively less rainfall leading to dry, treeless topography of that region. Mount Dhaulagiri forms a rainshadow in the Mustang district in the South and West and the Annapurna Massif to the North and East.

Mustang district is the largest protected area that falls under the Annapurna Conservation Area. Another important feature of the Mustang district is the Kaligandaki River starts flowing from near the Tibetan border and flows south through Kagbeni, Jomsom, Marpha, Tukuche, Lete, and Myagdi districts. While flowing Kaligandaki River forms the deepest gorge of Nepal Andha Galchi or Kaligandaki River gorge which is 7km south of Tukuche.

The majority of the population of Mustang district still speaks the traditional Tibetan language and some of them speak the Thakali language. Thakali is the dominant ethnic group in Mustang. Their main source of income is tourism, animal husbandry, and trade. Upper Mustang is famous for its traditional trade route connecting to the Tibetan plateau, Tibetan culture, thousand years old monastery, centuries-old man-made caves, sky caves, local wines, apples, khapse, & dried food.

The upper Mustang trek is considered a moderately difficult trek, we begin to trek from Jomsom 2700m elevation to the peak point of our trek Chogo La Pass at the height of 4230m. Traversing through Kagbeni, Chele, Gelling, Charang to Lo-man thang will be rewarding at every step because of the changing geographical landscape, Kaligandaki River, and view of Mt. Dhaulagiri, Tukuche, Nilgiri, and others. Visit Lo-Gekar Monastery, Namgyal Monastery, Tingkhar Monastery, and Chogo La Pass will be the special attractions of this trek.

This upper Mustang trek gives you the unique opportunity to feel the sophistication of Lo Manthang. Historical monuments, geographical uniqueness, social and cultural richness, intricately designed longest Mani (prayers stone) wall, prayers flags decorated thoughtfully in various locations, and glorious mountains of that region make your trip a golden memory trip of your life.
