Trip Overview

Among many trekking in the Everest region, Gokyo Lake is a popular, and thrilling trekking route. The incredible view from Gokyo Ri is one of the main highlights of this trek. Gokyo Ri is at an altitude of 5,357 meters from sea level whereas the altitude of Gokyo lake is 5,000 meters. Renjo La pass (5,360m) will be the highest elevation we reach in this trekking. Gokyo lake trekking is a less crowded alternative to Everest Base Camp. In Autumn and Spring, the base camp seems crowded with mountain climbers and trekkers. If you are the one who wants a peaceful Himalayan trekking route, Gokyo lake trekking is for you.

Furthermore, you will get to know Sherpa’s lifestyle and culture. Buddhist Monasteries are located in almost every village. In the western world, the Everest region is renowned for the dense population of Sherpa. Also, If you are lucky you may encounter wilderness including musk deer, Himalayan Thar, snow leopard, snowcock, and pheasant. Even more, people claimed that the fabled Yeti was somewhere in this Khumbu region.

Amazing views of snowy mountains, twinkling and pristine lakes, and Nepal’s longest glacier reward any visitor to this region. After 30 minutes scenic flight to Lukla from Kathmandu, your adventure of Gokyo Lake trekking starts. Lukla airport itself is the attraction of the Khumbu region. on the third day of trekking, you will reach Namche Bazar. Namche is a very beautiful Himalayan town located at the highest altitude.

Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu (1350m.)

Upon your arrival in Kathmandu, one of the BMS adventure Representatives will be at Airport to receive you. He/she will transport you from the airport to the hotel. You will get a brief overview of the trek tomorrow. After checking in you may freshen up and relax. Your overnight stay will be at the Hotel inclusive of breakfast.

Day 02: Fly to Lukla (2840m.) and Trek to Phakding (2610m.) 3-4 hours walk.

Your day starts in the early morning. You will get ready for the airport to catch a flight to Lukla. You will then have 30-40 minutes of scenic flight to Lukla airport. We will have our breakfast at Lukla and will be ready for an easy hike to Phakding. It will take approximately 3-4 hours to Phakding. You will get to see the river, jungle, and flowers en route to Phakding. Your overnight stay will be at the Guest House. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner are included.

Day 03: Phakding to Namche Bazar(3440 m.) 5-6 hours walk

Your second day in the mountains starts after a warm breakfast. On this day you will hike for approximately 6-7 hours to reach Namche Bazar from Phakding. Traversing along a suspension bridge of Dudh Koshi River at many places then will enter Sagarmatha National Park. Ascend to the Namche Bazar will be tiring and rewarding at the same time with the beauty of pine and Rhododendron forests. Having every sort of service and amenities in this beautiful town, Namche is literally known as the Gateway of Everest. Overnight at Guest House. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner are included.

Day 04: Acclimatization Day. Approximately 4-5 hours walk

This will be your first acclimatization day during your trek. Acclimatization is very important in mountain trekking to stay away from altitude sickness. Even more, we utilize the day with a short hike to Everest View hotel, which offers a legendary view of Mt. Everest, Ama Dablam and many more peaks. We will then Visit Khumjung village and explore some Buddhist monasteries and will be back to Namche Bazar by noon. Overnight at Guest House. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner are included.

Day 05: Namche to Khumjung (3780m.) 3-4 hours walk

We start our trek to Khumjung after having breakfast. Khumjung is a traditional village located above the Namche Bazar. It is also the largest village in the Khumbu region at the foot of the sacred peak Khumbila. The school is named after the first Everest climber Edmund Hillary; Hillary’s school is also in this village. We can visit the school too. Overnight at Guesthouse. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner are included.

Day 06: Khumjung to Dole (4200 m.) 5-6 hours walk

Another beautiful day starts with your morning breakfast. After breakfast, we will trail toward Dole. Walking in the mountain region is very difficult with high atmospheric pressure but low oxygen. But the trekking will be rewarded by beautiful scenery like; Rhododendron and pine forest, wonderful mountain vistas, Yak meadows, and many more. Overnight at Guest House. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner are included.

Day 07: Dole to Machermo(4470 m.) 4-5 hours walk

Like the previous day, you will wake up with a morning mountain breeze. Another amazing and easy day for you. En route to Machermo, after walking for an hour, will get into Luza (4,390 meters.) Walking through the side of the valley and chortens decorated with prayer flags. Will have an opportunity to see wonderful mountain views before we reach Machermo. Overnight at Guest House. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner are included.

Day 08: Machermo-Gokyo Lake (4790 m.) 4-5 hours walk.

Another adventurous and wonderful day for you. Hiking uphill and downhill, crossing rivers, and passing through various wonderful sceneries. You get to see many lakes en route such as Tobsoche Tosho, Dudh Pokhari, etc. Overnight at Guest House. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner are included.

Day 09: Early morning hike to Gokyo Ri (5,357 m.) for panoramic view and return to Gokyo and Rest day.

Today is the second rest and exploration day of your trip. We will carry a light hiking bag with a bottle of water and will hike up to Gokyo Ri to see the Himalayan vistas and pristine views of lakes. The enchanting view from the Gokyo Ri peak is the highlight of this trek. Not only this, we can have an incredible view of the highest peaks like; Mt. Everest, Cho-Oyu, Lhotse, Makalu, Nuptse, and many more. Back to Hotel. Overnight at Guest House. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner are included.

Day 10: Gokyo Lake to Lumde (4368m.) via Renjo Pass (5360m.) 6-7 hours walk

After breakfast, we embark further ahead. En route to Lumde, we will do one significant pass called Renja la pass which is 5360 m. high. Today, we will have a gradual descent towards Lumde. Approximately walking after 6-7 hours, we reach Lumde. Overnight at Guesthouse. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner are included.

Day 11: Lumde to Thame(3820m.) 4-5 hours walk

Today we start to hike down after having breakfast. On the way back to next place, we walk through the places called Marulung and Tarnga. Off course Mountain views and other impressive views can’t be ignored during the hike towards our destination. After 4-5 hours of easy walk we reach to Thame. Overnight at Guesthouse. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner are included.

Day 12: Thame to Manjo (2835m.)

We will start our hike down after having warm breakfast at Thame. Thame to Manjo is also another cheerful and comfortable hike for you. As we already spent two nights in Namche on the way to going up, we will not stop here this time. After passing through Namche Bazar, we continue to journey up to Manjo. Overnight at Guesthouse. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner are included.

Day 13: Manjo to Lukla (2840m.)

Today is the last day of walking in the trek. Just like the previous day we will start hiking after breakfast. We walk uphill and downhill through woodlands and crossing many beautiful place called; Phakding and many more. After 4-5 hours walking, we reach to Lukla. Overnight at Guesthouse. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner are included.

Day 14: Lukla to Kathmandu (1350m.)

It’s time to see off the homeland of the highest peaks; Solukhumbu. You will have an early morning breakfast and get ready to fly back to Kathmandu. After 30 minutes of adventurous and scenic flight, we arrive in Kathmandu. We drop you at the hotel. You will have a free and relaxing time. In the evening, we take you to a Typical Nepali restaurant for a farewell dinner with a live cultural program.

Day 15: Departure.

You will be transported to the airport by one of the BMS adventure representatives. We really hope that you had an unforgettable holiday experience with us. And we hope to see you again as our guests. Farewell !!!!

    What to pack in your bag?

    If you are planning your trip to a Himalayan country you should consider packing some warm clothes. in mountain weather keeps changing, we can find different weather on the same day. Weather in mountains tends to be windy to sunny to wet so we have listed a few things as a checklist for you.

    For head:

    • hat or p-cap to prevent the face from sunburn
    • woolen cap to keep warmth
    • scarf or muffler
    • the face mask as a virus precaution and protects your nose from heavy wind
    • sunglasses to protect the eyes and to see better in mountain

    For feet and hands

    • warm gloves
    • Sandal and sneakers
    • Thin cotton socks and thick woolen socks

    Trekking special items

    • sticks (which you can hire at Thamel, Kathmandu as well)

    Food during the trek

    Any kinds of food are available during the trek. Guesthouses have a menu that consists of both international cuisine and local Nepali cuisine. You can also try new cuisine which you haven’t tried before. Here are a few breakfast, lunch, and dinner options that are commonly found during the trek.

    Breakfast

    We can have a wide range of options for breakfast such as omelets, bread, cornflakes, cookies, oats, pancakes, milk, tea, coffee, hot lemon, boiled or fried beans, etc. somewhere you get traditional breakfast items such as Gurung bread (famous breakfast in Annapurna region), cell roti, puri, roti curry, etc.

    Lunch and Dinner

    Traditional Nepali lunch and dinner is Nepali khana consisting of Lentil soup, Rice, curry, pickle, and some salad. There is a famous saying around trekking areas “Dal Bhat power twenty-four hour” which means Nepali khana’s strength remains for twenty-four hours. For instance other than Nepali khana you can have varieties for lunch like; pizza, momo, chowmein, fried rice, noodles, spaghetti, soups, naan roti, etc. lunch and dinner menu look similar you can choose as per your comfort, and preference.

    Note: If you are vegan or in any diet restriction or allergic to anything, let your trek guide know beforehand.

     

    FAQ

    Will we be at the base camp in this trek?

    No, we will not be at the Everest Base camp on this trek. The highest point in this trek will be Renjo La pass at an altitude of 5,360 meters which is approximately the same elevation as the Everest Base Camp (5,364m).
